Pakistan Historical Society

Pakistan Historical Society

Following the achievement of Pakistan it was keenly felt that there was an urgent need for developing institutions for pioneering higher academic research, writing and compiling of text books etc., particularly in history which suffered from Orientalist and anti- Muslim slant in the pre-1947 period. Mr. Fazal ur Rahman the Federal Education Minister took the lead and on his initiative at first a Board of History was created in 1949 which next year was converted in to a regularly registered organization named Pakistan Historical Society (1950) based in Karachi.

The Pakistan Historical Society (PHS) was established to conduct research in history, collect basic source material for a specialized fully equipped library, publish books, hold conferences; seminars etc. and also publish a journal.

The Society held the first all Pakistan History Conference in 1951 at Karachi comprising all the leading historians and scholars. It was inaugurated by the Governor General, Khawaja Nazimudin. Since then PHS has organized 20 such conferences in various universities and cities of Pakistan. The 19th was held as the Golden Jubilee Session in Oct. 2001 at Karachi.

Research and publication programs also continued at the same time and so far it has published   86 books monographs, source books in English, Persian and Urdu.

Some of them are:

  1. History of freedom movement                                  (4 vols.) English

  1. War of Independence 1857                                       English

  1. Islamic Thought and Movement                               English

  1. Administration of the Sultanate                                English

of Delhi

  1. Wafayat al- a yan of Ibn Khalikan’s                         (8vols.)Improved and revised

Biographical Dictionary.                                           English translation.

  1. Tabaqat Ibn Sa d                                                       (2 vols.) English

  1. Muhammad (S.A.W) Life & Times              Winner of the Best book Award on

                                                                                  Sira in 1998.

  1. Road to Pakistan (vol.1)                                Winner of Best book award.

(712-1858)

  1. Dhakhirat al- Khawanin                                (3 vol. Persian)

  1. Dhakhirat al- Umara (of Keval Ram)                        (2 vols.) Persian.

  1. Tazkirah Ulema- Hind                                   Urdu translation

(1961&2004 New revised edition)

The Society’s journal was first published in 1953 and since then it has been coming out regularly and is regarded as one of the leading journal’s on History, particularly South Asian History. It has also completed 50 years of its publication which was marked by a special issue, the Quaid- i- Azam number (2002) which won general acclaim. Its 53rd Volume I being published this year.

However, the PHS had passed through many phases. It lacks a permanent Office or building. It also used to receive a grant up to 2003 from Federal government   but there were times like past year (2004) when it received no help. At this juncture the Hamdard Foundation of Pakistan under the inspiring leadership of Hakim Muhammad Said Saheed and now under the patronage of Mrs. Sadia Rashid a worthy daughter of a worthy father provides the much needed support by housing the office and Library of the PHS at Bait al-Hikmah, providing financial help and also taking over the responsibility for publication of the journal. The last three conferences of the PHS were also fully sponsored by them and their patronage is also greatly responsible for holding the present one.

At present PHS is in the process of publishing besides the journal , The Mathnavi Mubin  by emperor  Babur in Turkish with Urdu ,English translation .The old Volume of Tabqat Ibn Sa‘d (Companins of Badar) in English ,Index of the journal, Proceedings of the 20th Pakistan History Conference, Special issue of the journal on the All India Muslim League and a two day Seminar in Pakistan Movement.

The Founder of Pakistan and Today's Pakistan

Venice, 25th December 2010.

Today across the world our Christian brethren are celebrating the Christmas and Pakistan is celebrating the birth of its founder  Muhammad Ali Jinnah .  As a common Pakistani and student i often think that why  Jinnah  is remembered? , because of  being just the founder of Pakistan ? or because of his whole chracter as father of nation and his  speeches he left behind ? . I have no doubt that  Jinnah is remembered ceremonial ,  just as a founder of Pakistan and  less for his principles and speeches and  we as a nation only repeat him  on his birth or death anniversary and rarely one had tried to adopt his words as a principles .

Jinnah has been regarded by different  school of thoughts as per thier aspirations and agenda. From India with love on one hand he has been praised by Jaswant Singh and on other hand Ramjeth Malani , then a senior advocate remembered him,  who did not joined an Hindu Law firm at Karachi  just because of 25 rupees as Jinnah was demanding 100 rupees per month while the Law firm offered him 75 rupees Salary. He added  , Jinnah did not created Pakistan , It were Hindu Miser who did not pay hi more 25 rupees and caused the creation of Pakistan.

Mr. Malani is infact missunderstood because Quaide e azam   wanted a pakistan that gives the way to Muslims of India to live thier own life based on their culture and religion. He made it clear that Muslims of India can not be defined as minority and united india was an unpracticle and impossible idea. From the first day Jinnah vowed  for cordial relationship with our immediate  neighbours and pointed out  " We have no ambition beyond the desires , to live honourably and let others live honourably."

Our present  politicians  just use the name of  Jinnah more than following his lessons . Last week Marvi Memon facing a  questions in a talk show Dunya Today shamelessly replied about their party , In fact we are the party of Quaid e Azam  . One would ask her to give a single example from her leadership that match even a single world with Jinnah .
One thing is very clear , Quaid e azam never wanted such Pakistan as its today. He left a Pakisan that sposed to  live with honour  and let others live with honour , but iam afraid our  politicians and establishment will leave no stone unturned to justify Mr. Abul Kalam Azad who was having different version for the separate land for Muslims at the end of British tyrannies.

Today how  many people  Know about  Jinnah  in Pakistan , I  belive every one in  and i am not agree with the report shown in  a talk show in which many students can be seen  admiting being unaware about Quaid e Azam . It may be happen perhapes  camera team  has itself requesed to students to talk about quaid e azam day  in this manner  for easing  thier task given by the  channel. It happens and they (channels) know better than any one else.

Today's Pakistan  is a country left by Jinnah but perhapes never desired by him , we made Jinnah wrong for his  every desire and word he said about  his dream .We went into the class system since right from his death  specially feudal class .  These people  who send thier childrens to Oxford  but  could not even provide a  primary school in thier villages and  if there were  , these schools  have been conversted into  guest houses by these feudals.

On every second day , news papes and channels talk about corruption in Pakistan , but rarely invastigated . Accountability bill has been waiting since two years for approval  in parliment and no one seems serious to come forward and speak .  we are living among those people ho happened to be on the key positions at government but never took pain to pay tax for this country . Not only politicians  Pakistan has always been the victim by some Arymy generals in terms of corruption , who considered to be bove the law and thus could never called by any court of justice for thier corruption.  We  could not get any answer for thier corruption whether its NLC scandle or  locomotives bought from china in Mushrraf regim. Some times prob is announced but its another attempt to hide facts from public.

Finally a large number of pakistani have been living abroad from decades and still many wishe to leave country  legally or illegally for green pasture . Once they come abroad they might be seen with bit importance by thier families but the  cost they  pay for thier  home sickness and  for being away from thier loved ones , nobody can imagin ,  though this is there own choice but who wants to be away from home if every thing is provided by state in terms of social security . In 2005 Foreign Secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan has answered at the senate boody meeting  that majority of Pakistanis arrested in European countries preferred to remain in jails instead of returning to their country in the hope of a better life there.

Floods in country, independence day and the great Betrayal

On the eve of 14th August 2010 Pakistani nation is celebrating their 63th Independence with history's worst Floods in country which claimed thousands life and made more than 20 million people homeless. The UN has mentioned that "massive floods in Pakistan could exceed the combined total in three recent mega disasters - the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake"Pakistan flood crisis bigger than tsunami, Haiti: UN  .

Pakistani nation has shown the great courage for helping their brethren in 2005 earthquake , i still remember that in Ramadan of 2005 when we went to PAF museum at Karachi we had to wait in long Que of vehicles due to presence of thousand of people willing to contribute for the earthquake affected people . The donation appeal was made by Fakhr-e-Alam  , a singer , not a politician neither an influential person that time but hundred thousand of people gave their donations with open heart . I still remember his words " i don't need the cheques of 10 million or 20 million as some people left these here for me , please provide me stuff ... buy me fuel of Helicopters .. iam not interested in money" .

What happened today ? Why Pakistani Nation is not coming out of homes for help , our media reports find out two factors for this cause , one that Inflation has made life so miserable that Pakistani are living their life hand to mouth .. people are calling on TV networks and said My electric bill was 600 rupees with the same usage today its 1700 rupees from where shall we pay for help . Second is a trust deficit , three days before in a talk show it was mentioned by Salim Safi , that Prime Minister's flood relief account could merely gain 4.5 million rupees, chief minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's account could manage less then 10 million and Punjab's Chief minister could gain 45 million rupees in their flood relief account .

I came in Italy in 2005 for my PhD in Oriental studies and after completion this year iam still here seeking another Post doctoral opportunity , I often think what happened if it had had happened in Italy ? taking in mind that almost 7 out of 10 Italian i met are not satisfied with their governance , many of Senior PhD holders are still waiting for research related jobs .They think that they are sinking day by day . But i still consider that Italy has welfare system that we used to read in our primary schools books and Islamic teaching , though we never found them piratically in Pakistan .

First of all In Italy , what ever you do , any kind of work from working in a restaurant to any highest job you might imagine . you are considered an employee of government because you are paying every month tax to State and when you are in need ..State will be your friend indeed. The Italian state is not only giving free health and education to people living in Italy but also holds not only itself responsible for the welfare of people paying tax in Italy but also their family unites living out of Italy. On the end of every July Italian government reimburse the taxes of people including foreigners stating that their children are studying in Pakistan etc . Moreover in 2009 every person with an income till 15 thousand Euro / years was given a bonus of 300 euros per child to battle with world economic crises. I often ask myself how its possible and the Answer is clear ..by better TAX system.

Every Pakistan living abroad wheather in italy or elswhere pay more taxes here then paid by our politicians like  Zardari  who paid 40 thousand ruppes only and Nawaz shareef who did not paid anything last year as a tax. Both are considered  billionair,  the claim is right or wrong but general beileved by people .

In the time of need in Pakistan who shall contribute , every one ! but there are some people who shall pay the flood taxes. Those Sugar cartels who sold sugar to the nationals on price of more than 60 rupees per Kg. Those who have increased the price of LPG gas 25 rupees per kg in just 02 days . Those business men and Dukandars who shouted that due to closing our shops at 8pm instead of 10 pm our weekly loss is 03 billion rupees weekly at Tariq Road ..( brothers did you paid taxes ever mentioning this amount as your income ?) Not talking about infamous and generally believed corrupt people but talking about some very nice people in our Country like Chaudhry Aitaza Ahsan   who are famous to take millions rupees as lawyer and his wife is dealing in LPG gas and same about  Senator S M Zafar .
Government can take many steps as imposing 50 percent taxes on their income for some known very recognised richest personalities in Pakistan . Flood tax on buyers of luxury Cars , more taxes on owner of more than one house or having more than one car above 1300 CC. Fashion designers who were just claiming before some weeks that they were they only source of creating positive image of Pakistan by holding Pakistan fashion week shall be asked to pay more taxes for this Pakistan . Although one is agree or disagree  Nadeem F.Paracha came up with the opinion that  the class these fashion kings and queens belong to would probably be the first to exit a burning, turning Pakistan.

Talking about big brothers . Our armed forces who showed till now the men at their best , are seen making real efforts to save flood affected people are requested to do more, for instance they have the biggest budget then any one else in Pakistan so they should cut and spent this money of rehabilitation of Flood affected people, no matter we don't buy one F-16 this year ..instead this amount should be used for civilians . They should also ask their generals and officers who receive lands and plots in thousands rupees having actual market value of millions of rupees that this is the time of sacrifice , you have worked all life to save Pakistan and stood as ghazi , now its time to sacrifice sell your one plot and give this money for Flood affected people . Further more their officers are requested to pay next two years full fare instead of half to PIA when travelling and this half should go to the rehabilitation of these IDp's. So they should also start making habit of paying taxes .

The message should be Laud and clear .. Pay taxes , pay for the help of your country otherwise it shall be taken from you . I still believe if government give an exemption to those who earn below than 100 thousand per month , still they will find many people above than this figure should come forward willingly or by force to pay . Since 63 years Pakistan has been an heaven for money makers , over night riches , politician and Bureaucrats and Generals , smugglers , hoarders and different cartels, GAS quota beneficiaries and its time for them to pay with out any negotiations .

Concluding the message that i think  i was little bit able to convey to my friends . let me tell why i tittled this " the great Betrayal ". An article was published by Ardeshir Cowasjee in 1997 when President was Farooq Laghari and Prime minister was Nawaz Sharif , i wish to end this writeup with the paragraph of this article , soon we will come to know that just we need to change the names of our leaders from past to present from this articles and how best fit it in today's life after 13 years. When i read that Government has postponed all engagements of 14th august for celebration of independence i felt the government not only have lost another chance to appeal the nation that at this occasion please come out of your homes and pay as much as for your bothers but they also save themselves to face Quiade azam Muhammad ali Jinnah because and the cause is given by cowasjee long ago " *on this August 14 they would address the nation from the podium of his stolid mausoleum. However, heavily guarded as they are, the anarchy that prevails in the city has made them change their minds. They will now merely drop in, offer a hasty fateha and, hopefully, seek Jinnah's forgiveness, and then drop out. What the Founder of this country will tell them, from the depths of his tomb, they will not hear:

You, all of you who have ruled, led, and administered the state of Pakistan, have collectively and dissolutely broken faith with your people. You have betrayed both them and me.

You, the false leaders, the men of straw, have made it a practice to remember me, but you remember me as I was not, as I never was; you remember me solely as you find it convenient or politic to remember me. You deny that I was a man free of bigotry, liberal, tolerant, progressive, endowed with political dexterity and a good deal of common sense, not given to flights of fancy, that I was a normal human being with faults, foibles and failings, that I was a man with the strength to take upon himself a mission which fortune and fate permitted me to accomplish. You conveniently forget that having done so, when my time ran out I died with much apprehension about what I was leaving behind, I died with little or no trust in those in whose hands I was bequeathing my legacy (though I had but few regrets for what I had done). "  ( * the Above  whole paragraph is taken from the Column of Ardeshir Cowasjee , The great betrayal  published in Daily  Dawn  on 10 August, 1997 Sunday 05 Rabi-us-Saani 1418 )

Memories of Ziarat (Baluchistan)

I was admitted to University of Karachi in 1998-99 for BA (hons) in History and soon i was able to join already existed group of my friends ,Afzal Kikki (Geology), Dr sohail ( Pharmacy), Noman (Botany ) , Malik sahib (Pharmacy) , Zeeshan Kishore (Pharmacy) and two or three girls.

Let me introduce my friends briefly ,

Kikki now MashaAllah a Geo scientist at LMKR was a smart and funny guy of our group , he often visited my department wearing glasses and his particular hair style believed he was noticed by many gaalz.

Dr. Sohail , the Old & gold in our group, no one knows what his plans... a matured guy from his childhood .

Noman was famous as sab ka bhai (brother of all) , in girls presence his daily performance was deserved to watch..

Zesshan was a nice guy , deewana type . he used to work for his family departmental store at Bahadurabad and i remember in every Ramadan we went tariq road to shop for Eid ,but dinner was on his head ...His only sin was that why he was working at Bahadurabad. We sometimes ask him to sing one of the Kishore song and he was very nice at ke jab ghungrro band meera nacheee thee

Malik sahib , was a khamosh Tabiyat (ghunnah) , ( who knows many things but calm down ) ....

I cannot comment sincerely about my self so i leave it on my Friends but i was confused about many things .

First time we all together went to Ziarat Baluchistan for a week ..i still remember the cost of whole tour was not more than 2 thousand rupees per head and it was lot of enjoyment .. we visited all Ziarat without any fear , we even dint know what a fear is.....the people of ziarat were very loving and many Karachi's people we found there ... we termed it the most secured place.. here lovely Juniper forest, some trees aged up to 3000 years and on some hills you may touch the clouds too . When in June Karachi used to observed 40 degree Celsius Ziarat was nice cool and upto 20-25 degree Celsius. i still remember the night of Football world cup match final that we witnessed at PTDC Residence in which Brazil loosed against France.

On our return from match in full moon night we requested Zeeshan to come up with a song of Kishore and He started with ke Jab ghungrro band meera nachee thee.... when coming bak to Karachi we had a lot of shopping from Quetta.

After that time we went some two three years regularly to Ziarat in June July holidays and Last time i went when i started the second phase of my university in 2002 we gone their with university trip under supervision of Late Sir Israr...

on www.bbcurdu.com that media people had visited Ziarat under very heavy security so it makes me  feel  very bad and just thought  our old times that we spent there . The report is about Army's welfare efforts in Ziarat and Baluchistan and i was thinking who is actually responsible to bring Baluchistan on the brink of war.. perhaps we know all .
